Exhibition of Convent and Regional Sweets of Coimbra:

Exhibition of Convent and Regional Sweets of Coimbra:

In a city where there were once several convents – Celas, Santa Clara, Sant’anna, among others – sweets are a treasured heritage.

Among the numerous recipes, the specialties of Coimbra include the pastels of Santa Clara, the “manjar branco”, the “arrufadas” of Coimbra, the “queijadas”, the “talhadas de príncipe”, the “suspiros”, the “barrigas de freira”, the “encharcada” or the “pão de ló”4.

Over the years and for various reasons, the art of cooking ingredients as eggs, sugar, pumpkin and almond was falling into oblivion. However, research work continued and the passage of the oral and written testimony have made it possible to reset, with care, the confectionery of Coimbra.

By organizing “Mostra de Doçaria Conventual e Regional de Coimbra” (Conventual and Regional Confectionery Exhibition of Coimbra) which brings to the city numerous visitors, the City Council of Coimbra intends to keep alive the richness of the forms, flavors and knowledge, preserving and disseminating the heritage of Coimbra’s confectionery and other specialties which, in the same manner had expression in localities that are also present in the event, forming a sweet geographical picture that is worth tasting!

4The terms above refer to traditional pastry specialties particular to the municipality of Coimbra.
