Founded in December of 1922, the Municipal Library of Coimbra (BMC) provides a service of local public reading through a network of libraries attached to it (Almalaguês, Assafarge, Brasfemes, Ribeira de Frades and S. João do Campo) and a traveling library (Bibliomóvel).

Is a recipient of the Legal Deposit since 1931 and, throughout its existence have been incorporated into its important estates of personalities and institutions of Coimbra, such as the libraries of “Revista Vértice” and of the “Associação dos Artistas de Coimbra”, or the spoils of António Augusto Gonçalves, Afonso Duarte and Manuel da Silva Gaio, among others.

 

It currently has a vast collection of more than 520 000 monographs, about 30 000 titles of periodical publications and 6000 audiovisual documents in constant updating, as well as a rich photographic collection with a theme predominantly of the city of Coimbra, from which is distinguished the spoils of the best photographer.

 

It is worth mentioning the history background of the city of Coimbra that is composed of a vast and rich collection of documents that are available for local consultation, through the Office of History of the City.

 

BMC has a Braille core and audiobooks available for free loan to visually impaired or visually ill people.

 

With the permanent goal of promoting reading habits by facilitating access to books and information, BMC offers a Reference Service that provides a customized service to the reader, and it is worth highlighting the possibility of renewing the loan of books, audio CDs and video films (VHS and DVD) via email.

 

All documents entered in the BMC since 1992 are searchable on the computerized bibliographical database.
