The Topographic Plan of the City of Coimbra, 1932/34, cartography obtained by aerial photography surveying was a technological revolution at the time.
The City Council of Coimbra ordered the production of this work based on this innovative technique having been the first performed in Portugal on a large scale.
The concern and priority of the Municipality was the improvement of the living conditions of its inhabitants, both in the Upper part of the city, and in the Downtown part of the city. However, in order to develop an Urbanization and Improvement Plan, it was necessary to survey the duly listed city plant.
The geographer José Baptista Lopes and his team were responsible for the execution of this work. AHMC is the depository of all such documentation.
Apart from the technical and scientific interest, this plant is of great importance to the history of Coimbra. It presents, in great detail, the upper part of Coimbra before the execution of the works of the University City which destroyed the old urban network, forever changing the city’s profile.
For the current geo-community, it proved be a tool of geographic information at different temporal scales.
These characteristics determined an in-depth study on this Cartographic Survey and the details of its execution by a group of authors of different fields of knowledge: Virginia Manta (CMC/DIGS); Paula França (CMC/AHMC); José Gonçalves (FCUP/DGAOT). The historical and technical aspects of its production and its current application were analyzed with three communications on the theme: – VII National Conference on Cartography and Geodesy (CNCG 2011), 5th of May of 2011, Porto, FCUP.
– IV Luso-Brazilian Symposium on Historical Cartography (IVSLBCH) from the 9th to the12th of November of 2011, at Porto, FLUP. Communication accessible at: http://eventos.letras.up.pt/ivslbch/comunicacoes.aspx

– Technical Session of the Order of the Engineers (Central Region), at the 15th of July of 2011, Coimbra.
