Yaroslavl was founded as a city-fortress at the beginning of the eleventh century by the prince of Kiev, Yaroslavl, the Wise. However, that wild zone had once been occupied by a heathen tribe. Legend has it that the prince only managed to dominate it after having killed a female bear, his sacred animal. This legend was printed on the city’s coat of arms, in which a “bear holds with his left paw a silver ax”.
It was an important political and religious center, which is also reflected in the style and architectural richness of some of its buildings such as churches, monasteries and other monuments. There are approximately 5000 historical monuments in Yaroslavl, including three recommended by UNESCO to visit: The Kremlin of Rostov, and the Cathedrals of S. João Baptista and that of Elijah, the Prophet. There are also four theatres in the city and a dynamic cultural schedule, which includes international exhibitions and music festivals.
The city was the birthplace of F. Volkov, the founder of the first Russian theatre and also of the famous poet of the nineteenth century, J. Nekrassov and Valentina Terechkova, the first cosmonaut woman.
Yaroslavl is not only a city-museum, but also a major industrial, scientific, and cultural center.
