Its settlement began around 1540 resulting in an important architectural legacy, which, in addition to museums and churches, deserves special mention the “Bolsa Oficial do Café”, a landmark of the city’s wealth. Santos has the largest port in Latin America built in the twentieth century, and which constitutes their main source of economic activity, in addition to tourism and trade. The city is also the seat of several institutions of higher education.
Santos is also the city that was the birthplace of renowned figures, such as José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva, patriarch of the independence of Brazil.
