Due to its unequaled cultural and architectural heritage and its excellent conservation, Compostela was considered in 1940 as an Historical, Artistic and National Monumental Complex. In 1984, UNESCO declared it Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Subsequently, the Council of Europe has recognized “El Camino de Santiago” as the First Cultural Itinerary of Humanity. It is a world city famous for its cathedral of a baroque facade where there are the pilgrims who make up the “Caminos de Santiago”.
In 1995, the Council of the Culture Ministers of the European Union has designated this city as the European City of Culture for the year 2000 alongside Avignon, Bergen, Bologna, Brussels, Krakow, Helsinki, Prague and Reykjavik, configuring a map in which are represented the north, center and south of Europe.
