It was elected by the Franciscan Priests as the foundation site of the eighth of the 21 missions in California- Mission Santa Clara of Assisi, on the 12th of January of 1777, and from this fact stems the origin of the name of the city. The Mission and the Gardens are located on the soil of the Santa Clara University, which is the oldest institution of higher education in the state of California.
In 1852, Santa Clara was promoted to city, fact which had direct consequences in the increase of infrastructures and population. The city also has recognized museums. The Saisset Museum at Santa Clara University, the Triton Museum of Art and the Inte’s Museum are just a few examples.
Nowadays, Santa Clara is recognized worldwide as the home to some of the largest and most influential high-tech companies.
