The city of Mindelo has a population of 62 970 inhabitants, with a total area of 67 km2. It is located on the island of São Vicente and is the second largest city of Cape Verde.
It occupies a total area of 67 km2 northwest of the island, in the Bay of Porto Grande, natural harbor formed by the submarine crater of a volcano with about 4 km in diameter. Ilhéu dos Pássaros, with 82 meters of altitude and that hosts a small lighthouse signals the other end of the crater.
The city also houses a deep-water port – Porto Grande – which serves as a transatlantic scale for ships of all nationalities.
The city is very particular and cosmopolitan, with mild climate and temperatures. Its architecture is a result of the colonial major influences – the Portuguese and the British. It worth mentioning the Governor’s Palace, the City Council, the Pracinha da Igreja, Avenida Marginal (with the replica of Torre de Belém – Lisbon), and Alfândega Velha (old customhouse).
It has an intense cultural life, and intense is also the Mindelense Carnival, the largest and the best in the country, a major tourist attraction of national and international operators who have believed in the potentialities of S. Vincente and have been investing in hotel units of world class quality.
In recent years, tourism has been elected as one of the key growth sectors of the economy of Cape Verde.
