It is a wetland that comprises two distinct areas: an alluvial plain, where there is an extensive reed and some farming areas, and a protected zone, which extends along the slopes that flank the valley occupied essentially with forest and some farming outside the urban areas. Paúl de Arzila is classified as a Nature Reserve due to its ornithological importance, since it is an autumnal passage zone for trans-Saharan migratory birds; it is also a feeding and resting area for several species, a shelter and nesting area of strictly Paludicolous species, and a place for wintered Palaearctic species. The mascot of this reserve is a Red Heron (Ardea Purpúrea), considering its importance as a nesting specie in this protected area.
