Lapa dos Esteios:

Lapa dos Esteios:

It’s a mythical place of Coimbra’s history from where it’s possible to enjoy a unique landscape of the river and the city. Located about 2 km from Coimbra, the Lapa dos Esteios is inserted in an idyllic setting, next to the left bank of the Mondego River, integrated in the old Quinta das Canas, a beautiful 18th century farm. Originally owned by the Sá Pessoa family, the space only gained its prevalent romantic spirit in the 19th century, with the intervention of the Melo Freire de Bulhões family.

Sung by poets and a privileged place for the tertúlias [a meeting between friends to discuss various topics, especially literary subjects] of famous intellectuals for almost a century, this place retains a valuable heritage even today.

The entrance is made through a sumptuous gate, where we can still see the Sá Pessoa family coat of arms, followed by the garden and an avenue of plane trees, with the Fonte da Primavera [Fountain of Spring], dating from the 17th century. Also worth highlighting are the set of statues representing Asia, the Fortress, and the Greek philosopher Diogenes.

The property was acquired by the Fiscal Guard in 1979, which proceeded to a large undertaking to recover the space, since it was in an advanced state of degradation at the time.

In addition to the architectural heritage, the space also deserves a visit for its arboreal framework, its gardens and plants, its lush riverine vegetation that flank the river banks, and the exceptional view over the city, where everything is harmoniously combined, in a bucolic touch reminiscent of other times, full of romanticism and beauty.
