Monument To The Unknown Soldier
To mark the Portuguese presence and honour the memory of the soldiers who died in the Battle of La Lys, several monuments were erected in the main cities of the country: “Monuments to the Unknown Soldier.”
In Coimbra, the Coimbra’s Agency of the Combatants League Commission took the initiative, presided by Captain Augusto dos Santos Conceição. The monument was inaugurated on 10 June 1932. It is a limestone work by Luís Fernandes in partnership with the architect António Varela, representing 4 soldiers in the uniform of the First World War, at the ready and assuming the position of the 4 directions around a column surmounted by a projectile that supports the city’s coat of arms.
