Jardim da Manga | Claustro da Manga [Manga Garden | Manga Cloister]:

The reconstruction of the northern haul of the Monastery of Santa Cruz buildings, under the reforms implemented by King D. Manuel and King D. João III  allowed a second cloister to be build: the Manga Cloister, also called Third Cloister or Nursing Cloister.

It is one of the first entirely Renaissance architectural works made in Portugal. It was a work that had the direct participation of João de Ruão, namely in the joint design of the cloister and the four reliefs for the cubes of the central spring evoking the Spring of Life.

The Manga Cloister was handed over to the city council in 1839, and has received several restoration and conservation interventions since then.
